QuickTime

QuickTime was developed by Apple as a multimedia framework that can handle  various formats of movies, slideshows, music and animations.

QuickTime Player is available free for both Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows.

According to the gospel preached by Steve Jobs, QuickTime is still viable but its popularity is greatly exceeded by Flash.

PC users running Internet Explorer are far more likely to have Adobe Flash installed than QuickTime.

If you are going to utilize QT on your website you should point out to your viewers that QuickTime Player is required and is available free for PC users by clicking the download icon you are going to have on your webpage.

Control click the Q icon on this page and download it to your desktop.

Click the icon to get the URL and copy it to your clipboard.

Drag the icon onto your webpage, select it and, in the Link inspector, set it up as an external link to open in a new window.

QuickTime

Using QuickTime to play your music, movies and slideshows is as easy as dragging them onto your iWeb page and the application takes care of the rest.

Its this “easy way out” that seems to compel people to use it as they are usually totally unaware of all the problems it will create somewhere down the line.

This is how an MP3 file will look when dragged onto your iWeb page. You can add an image so that it will look like the one to the right or you can leave it blank so that it appears on your published web page as just the control bar shown below.

That’s about it for music files. On the next couple of pages we’ll look at a couple of ways to do slideshows.
